Before you buy a home treadmill – things to consider

February 11th, 2010 by DietGal | Filed under Exercise & Fitness.

A home treadmill is both an excellent piece of exercise equipment and a big investment. So you don’t want to be going into it head over heels. No, it should be thought over thoroughly and all the relevant factors have to be taken into consideration to ensure that you get the best deal. To help you do that, I will share with you the top 10 things you have to consider before buying a home treadmill.

1. Motorized or manual
You first have to decide if you want a manual or a motorized treadmill. A manual treadmill is less expensive, but the motorized treadmill has much more power.

2. Decide on proposed use
Next you have to decide if you are going to use the treadmill for walking, running or a combination of the both.

3. Right features for walking
Then you have to check that the treadmill you are looking for has the right features. For walking you won’t need such a big motor, the deck size can be smaller and the padding can be less.

4. Right features for running
For running, on the other hand, you will need a big motor, a longer deck and sufficient padding.

5. Space available for storage
Check if you have enough storage space available and that the treadmill will fit into that space.

6. How many people are going to use it?
The number of people that will use the treadmill usually controls the number of user profiles that you will need.

7. Entertainment needs
Think about your entertainment needs. Will you need an onscreen TV or music player and must the treadmill be compatible to your iPod or music player?

8. Your budget
Keep your budget in mind when you browse for your home treadmill.

9. Noise levels
As some treadmills make noise, you have to consider whether you will need a quiet treadmill or not.

10. Workout programs and special futures
Lastly, think about the number of workout programs you will need and if you will require special futures like a BMI measurer or a built in fan.

For when the home treadmill is not the right machine, there are two other pieces of exercise equipment that just might be a better fit for you. Check out the fitness eliptical machine and the mini stepper exerciser. For cardio, the elliptical is your best bet and for toning the steppers are supreme.

If you follow the above tips with your treadmill purchase, you will most definitely get the treadmill of your dreams. Just make sure that you use it regularly and that it doesn’t become covered in dust. And remember to place a treadmill mat underneath to limit the wear and tear.
