If you are looking at purchasing a good squat rack, then one company that you have probably come across is Marcy. Marcy is a good name from Iron Company that has been making various fitness products for several years. Included in the equipment that the Marcy brand makes are dumbbells, weight benches, and squat racks (to name just a few).
When you look at the offerings in the Marcy squat rack line, you can tell by the price what type of equipment you are getting. In general, Marcy equipment is decent quality, but not the most expensive nor top of the line, and that is a pretty good description of their squat rack equipment. For around $250 you can get a combo squat rack, bench press set that is decently built and comes with your standard quality attachments. This is a pretty good place to start if you are looking for an economical way to put together your own home gym workout.
However, in terms of the squat rack, there are a couple of issues that you want to pay attention to. First of all, there is no back supporting poles with Marcy’s sets. Generally I like to recommend full squat cages for people who are just starting out or who are lifting at home without spotters, as you do increase your risk of injury greatly by not having both lower and back support poles included in the system. In addition, the bottom support poles are not really there either – making it even harder if you are not an experienced squatter.
Bottom line – if you are an experiences weight lifter and have a good spotter, then I would recommend the Marcy equipment. However, if you are a new, beginning weight lifter (or just don’t have much experience with squats) then I would probably recommend a different set up. While a full ‘box’ would take up more space, it would be a lot safer for you and would help you concentrate on building your muscles more than worrying about injuries.
