Review of Master Your Metabolism by Jillian Michaels

[ReviewAZON asin="0307450732" display="inlinepost"]Master Your Metabolism is much more than a diet book. In some respects, you could consider it Jillian Michael’s food manifesto: Stop eating processed crap and start eating real food!

Jillian goes in depth on how hormones impact our diet and our efforts to lose weight, first by starting with a broad overview and then targetting specific hormones that may be giving your problems.

After that, the bulk of the book takes up the promotion of eating organicly and eliminating as many processsed foods from your diet as possible. You’ll start with eliminating many of the additives that are likely stalling your weight loss and transitioning to organic foods as much as possible.

Jillian’s view may be a bit extreme for some, especially if your wallet isn’t going to handle switching entirely to organic foods too well. But I think the basic message that you should eat foods much closer to their natural state is solid advice. If you have hit a serious plateau however, this may just be the jumpstart your body needs to kick your metabolism back into gear — which is, of course, the whole point of this book.

In addition to the details about what to eat, Jillian Michaels also advocates for using glassware over plastics for storing food and for the elimination of frequent use of OTC and prescription drugs. This latter point is likely to be controversial with some and I don’t advocate taking the advice of a weight loss guru over the advice of your own doctor.

Overall though, I think this is a pretty solid effort from Jillian Michaels. The message isn’t really a new one. If you’ve read Food, Inc., Fast Food Nation, or anything by Michael Pollan, you’ll be quite familiar with these ideas, but they are well-presented here and a bit more accessible for a lay audience.
