What Fats are Allowed on Medifast

The Medifast diet is designed to make sure you get the right amounts of carbohydrates, fats and proteins in your diet each day while still losing weight both quickly and safely. What we are going to take a look at in this article is the fats that are allowed for your Medifast lean and green meals.

Dietary fats are often not the weight loss culprit that many dieters think they are and it is important to make sure that some fats are included in all diets, as some vitamins and minerals are fat-soluble only and your body can’t use them if you’ve eliminated all fat from your diet. For example, you need fat in your diet in order to be able to absorb Vitamins A, D, E, and K.

Additionally, dietary fat also helps make sure your gallbladder works properly and fats give you a sense of fullness after eating. Delicious fats contribute a great deal to satiety and this can keep you from overeating.

With these facts in mind, the Medifast plan includes healthy fat servings in the weight loss plan. You’ll choose how many servings to add based on what your lean portion is that day as many of the lean options have sufficient fat in them. But let’s go ahead and take a look at just the additional fat options you have.

Your Fat Servings on Medifast include the following:

  • One teaspoon of canola, flaxseed, walnut, or olive oil
  • 5- 10 green or black olives
  • Up to 2 tablespoons of low-carbohydrate salad dressing (look for dressings that contain less than six grams of carbs and approx. 5 grams of fat per serving)
  • One teaspoon of trans fat-free margarine

If you prefer to get your fats from your lean portion rather than the additional extras, then you will want to consider some of the delicious lean options you have available, such as salmon, tuna, lamb, pork chops and dark meat turkey or chicken. On Medifast, you can also choose to enjoy three whole eggs one per week. So you don’t have to throw away the most delicious part of the egg — the egg yolk!
